Alban Dewes Winspear (1899-1973) was born in Birmingham and received his education in English and Canadian schools. After serving with the Royal Air Force in World War I, he studied at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. Here he earned the Rhodes scholarship which took him to Corpus Christi College, Oxford, for three years. His own university, Queen’s, gave him his first lectureship in Classics and this was followed by an appointment to the Department of Classics at the University of Wisconsin. Besides nearly two decades at Wisconsin, Winspear taught briefly Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania. He is now Professor of Classics at the University of Alberta in Calgary.
